Weekday daytime hours are generally preferred Description:  LinkAge is developing schemes to try to combat the isolation of older people in the community. One of these schemes is our Tea & Talk Befriending scheme which finds people of all ages (over 18yrs) to provide companionship to an elderly and isolated person. We are particularly interested in finding people over 50 years, or retired people to be part of our scheme. We welcome people who can sit and talk with an older person on a weekly basis, perhaps accompany them to shopping or a social activity. The befriender needs to be a good listener, understanding and considerate. It is essential they are reliable and comfortable meeting the older person in their home. It is advantageous for the befriender to have a car, but not vital. LinkAge befrienders are supported by the volunteer coordinator. We undertake a CRB check and provide an introductory briefing for our volunteers. We also organise small socials for our team. A great team building event which caters for all levels of rowing experience. A great day out and loads of fun! When and Where? The Dragon Boat Race 2010 is being held at Baltic Wharf in Bristol on Sunday 26th September 2010. What are the details? > Each team will have a crew of no more than 16 in any one race plus a drummer. Numbers may be reduced in adverse weather conditions. Crew members can be alternated for each race. > Minimum age is 13. Up to the age of 16 a child must be accompanied by an adult. > Entry fee for the team is £350 and must be paid in full. This entry fee is non-refundable once entry is confirmed. The Speakers’ Corner project is designed to promote open debate and the free, face-to-face exchange of ideas and opinions among citizens, not only as an important means of strengthening public commitment to the principle of free speech, but also of enhancing community relations and re-engaging citizens in public life and governance. Bristol is among the first and most important projects promoted by Speakers’ Corner Trust (www.speakerscornertrust.org). A local Committee, made up of representatives of the public, voluntary and private sectors, has been established to ‘own’ and manage the initiative over the long term. Over the coming twelve months, its priorities will include  establishing a Speakers’ Corner at College Green  launching the project, possibly to coincide with Local Democracy Week (15-19 October)  promoting Bristol’s Speakers’ Corner as a platform for local people and voluntary/community groups  developing a programme of events at the Speakers’ Corner and elsewhere in Bristol  broadening and sustaining Committee membership  developing good working relations with local organisations – in particular those in the public, voluntary and community sectors  securing basic operational funding and medium-long term administrative support  launching a website (subject to resources). The successful candidate should be committed to the aims of the initiative and capable of playing a key role in both implementing and developing them. He/she should be energetic and imaginative with the confidence and discretion required to negotiate with decision-takers and opinion-formers as well as potential partners and collaborators. He/she should also be a good organiser, an effective communicator and a persuasive motivator of others. He/she will be expected to:  work closely with the Chair and other members of the Bristol Speakers’ Corner Committee and with Speakers’ Corner Trust  stimulate and coordinate the contributions of a range of partners/supporters  negotiate with public authorities  identify and negotiate with potential funders and collaborators  promote the initiative to key sectors including politicians and the media  work with third party organisations and individuals in preparing for and organising the launch of the project  work with the voluntary sector and others in organising a subsequent programme of events.
